We are now going to describe different Economics departments to you and ask in which one you would prefer to work. There are 5 of these questions.
(Note that Assistant professors were asked to answer the choice questions assuming they were associate professors with tenure and with the average salary for associate professors in their department.)

Please indicate which position you would prefer even if you dislike them both. After each of your pair-wise choices, you will be asked whether the position you chose is better or worse than your current position.
You might find the combination of characteristics in some of the alternatives unlikely. Estimation requires more independent variation than exists in the real world.
Pretests of this survey indicate significant preference heterogeneity: often one person's good is another's bad. The choice pairs were designed with this in mind.
